Painting While Depressed

Fire in My Soul

Here's a strange bit, I noticed that (after it was pointed out to me...) I only paint when I'm upset or depressed. Strange huh, pretty effective though, the ice cream is safe. And this painting came about when I was upset about something (can't remember what it was now) and needed to get that negative energy out of me. I didn't feel like painting my rose series (even though I have a dozen more to go...) plus I wanted to use up this tube of gold acrylic paint which was just too translucent. I must be angry since the background was flaming red and just slapped on the gold, quite like the effect the brush marks created. The gold seemed a bit flat for me still and to add on the fire effect I glitterized it. The painting is alive when you see it in real life how it shimmers and sparkles especially where the gold and red meets. One of my rare abstract pieces. Still not sure if it's finished, am thinking of using gold leaf on it to create more texture...

I also decided to make a twin for the painting where it is the opposite, dark, still and depressing. I started it, the base colours were down, it was just a matter of working more into it. But it was never finished, after that I was never depressed enough to paint. It's hard trying to paint depression when one is happy :-)

A Rose By Any Other Name

So far I like this painting of mine, it was sold and bought but the owner couldn't take it with them at that time and left it with a friend of theirs. I went over to that friend's place and they were saying they don't know what to do with it as they were moving house. I said I'll just keep it at my place then since it is my painting, just different owners. I rather hang on to it and know it'll be safe with me than to have the poor thing stuffed up somewhere in a store room.

So it currently hanging in my studio, I took down the black and white banana skin and spring charcoal morphed drawing I did from back in art school foundation, and hung up the rose. It' s about 4 feet by 3 feet, using acrylic paints. I like the bronze contract of the background to the rose, I'm trying to figure out how else to paint using metallic colours...

Art Night

Figured it'll be nice to do an art night, a bunch of friends hanging out together doing our various arts and crafts at our regular haunt. The last time it was held I came up with the purple flying elephant. This time I painted a rose, painted a petal at a time, like the layers I started from the outside and worked my way in. The center of the rose was a bit challenging and it took me another night just to get it right. I'm quite happy overall how it turned out and I only use five colours for it.

Well, that was a nice break, gotta start on my next book commission now...
